The Middlegate Hills Fossil Flora Locality, Churchill County, Nevada

The view is roughly northeastward to the whitish-colored Middlegate Hills in the distance. From this perspective, the low, rounded, rather nondescript hills lie approximately two miles away. The Middlegate Hills are composed of extremely fine-grained cream-white to pale brownish opaline shales which produce a genuine bonanza of beautifully preserved Middle Miocene plant remains some 16 million years ancient.
